What is a Domain name? Why do I need it?
In summary: A domain name is the name that a user types to connect to a website, each domain name is always accompanied by a suffix that indicates the country where the website is located e.g. .gr (Greece) .it (Italy).
An IP address is a unique combination of numbers assigned to each computer that connects to the Internet. Think of IP addresses as street addresses. These identify where each computer is on the Internet and help with routing information so that it is easy to “travel” between computers! However, an address like 192.170.2.93 is not a little difficult to remember? Also think how hard it would be to keep track of every IP for every different website you want to connect to!
Domain names make it easy for you!
When a computer requires an IP address to connect to a website, we humans use Domain Names! The Domain Name System (DNS) takes domain names such as tasiosdesigns.gr and converts them into IP addresses that a computer needs to communicate. Therefore, instead of typing an IP address to connect to our website, just remember tasiosdesigns.gr!
Communication procedure
When a user types a Domain Name in the browser or Web Browser. the browser uses the domain name to find the IP that is connected and returns the results associated with that IP. To think about it more simply, imagine that the domain name is something like the name of a contact on your mobile phone, when you tap that contact your mobile phone will dial the number associated with that contact. You don’t need to know where the person you are calling is, nor do you need to know their number by heart. All you have to do is tap on the contact’s name and your phone will do the rest!
Domain Registration
Each domain can only be registered by one user. Therefore, if you wish to register a particular domain you should first check if it is available. During the registration process, you enter your details as the owner and pay the annual fee set for the domain of your choice. The domain that you will register is bound to you for a specific period of time, as soon as it approaches its expiration you can renew it again, otherwise after its expiration it will be released from you and will be available again to be registered by another user.
